Rocky Balboa Has Nothing on Atlanta NHRA Top Fuel Winner Antron Brown

For Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Bob Tasca III (Funny Car), and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), their Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals victories Sunday at soon-to-be closed Atlanta Dragway were all about relationships.
Brown regarded his final-round duel against fellow three-time champions and best friend Steve Torrence as a heavyweight slugfest à la the Hollywood one from Sylvester Stallone’s
Rocky film. “That’s Rocky Balboa right there (referencing Torrence) and I’m Apollo (Creed). To get this win, it was truly remarkable. We just built on it every, every lap. Any time you can do this and get one of these (Wally trophies), it’s just so special.”
The final weekend at Atlanta Dragway has arrived and that means all the stars of the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will try to grab the historic last win at the 40th and final Lucas Oil NHRA Southern Nationals.
It’s also the first race in Atlanta since 2019 for most of the classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic, while Pro Stock will be making its first appearance at Georgia’s House of Speed since 2018. Nearly all drivers have some sort of memory at Atlanta Dragway, whether it was picking up a noteworthy victory or taking part in a memorable weekend. But everyone racing this weekend will have a takeaway by competing in the final event at the track. Only four, though, will leave with the Wally at the final appearance in Atlanta, a moment that will go down in history. Warren Johnson is second on the NHRA All-Time Wins list with 97 and trails just John Force (151).
Atlanta Dragway is celebrating its past by inviting past winners to join in the celebration of the final NHRA Southern Nationals on May 1-2 race weekend.
Greg Anderson, who trails Warren Johnson by two wins on the all-time list, worked on Johnson s crew during four of Johnson s six NHRA championship seasons.

Anderson, 60, is thee wins shy of all-time NHRA Pro Stock wins record, but not sure he ll reach that plateau.
