Opinion: Y all doesn t mean all in Johnson City

Guest Opinion Have you ever noticed that when it comes to politicians, a lot of times what’s offered are Band-Aid solutions — something that sounds good, appeases some donors and stakeholders, yet doesn’t actually solve the problem. In other words, this is how Johnson City has approached addressing its homeless population. This is why people hate politics. Kate Craig For me, politics has always been about people. Not power. Not advancing a personal power grab or the ability to influence. It’s about people. All people. After all, there are just some hurdles out there, that without the support of a community, will break us. I learned this after my motorcycle accident in 2013. Despite all of my own efforts, I needed a community to keep me afloat. I had no bootstraps I could use to pull myself up. In fact, I keep my Virginia EBT card from this time above my desk to remind me why I do this work. I could easily have been homeless during this time.

Johnson City s homeless strategy conflicts with service providers

For the most part, those camps are concentrated around downtown. If they’re occupied, employees remove items like food and camping supplies and ask any lingering inhabitants to leave. At the same time, city crews are out every morning removing homeless people from spots in the downtown area, including places like the Pavilion at Founders Park and from under canopies at the Downtown Square. Consultant will review financing for proposed $28M Sevier Center replacement

With a firm submitting an almost $28 million proposal to build new housing for residents of the John Sevier Center, Johnson City officials are doing their due diligence before committing to the project, which would still be at least a few years down the line. The Johnson City Development Authority on Wednesday approved a contract with the National Development Council, a New York nonprofit, to review the financial model for the development plan. LHP Capital, a real estate development firm in Knoxville, submitted plans to construct about 145 units of housing for seniors and residents with disabilities. LHP also serves as the property management company for the John Sevier Center and took over day-to-day operations in April. The company would eventually own the new housing if it’s allowed to finance and build it.

JCDA investing in Sevier Center repairs in preparation for HUD inspection

It will still be at least a few years before the Johnson City Development Authority sees its ambitions for the John Sevier Center fully realized. But, in the year and a half since it officially purchased the building, the organization’s leader says the JCDA is making progress bit-by-bit on its plan. In 2019, the JCDA bought the nearly century- old apartment complex with plans to eventually sell the building to a developer, unlocking the commercial potential for a structure that has for years served as subsidized housing. The center, located at 141 E. Market St., is one of the most visible buildings in the downtown area’s skyline. Although nothing is certain at this stage, officials have floated the idea of the redeveloped building eventually having residential options, retail and maybe even a hotel.
