Falmouth horse farm on thin ice with board of health

Smithfield Farm in Falmouth gets stable permit back following inspection

FALMOUTH Smithfield Farm got its stable permit back from the town of Falmouth after it was found to be complying with board of health regulations.  The Falmouth Board of Health voted at its Monday meeting to reinstate the farm’s stable permit after an inspection found that it met all regulations. The board also rescinded the $200 per day fine it had originally approved in May.   “I’m pleased that the town was able to look at this from the bylaws and Smithfield Farm has done everything it needed to do to get its license back,” said Sarah Long, the attorney representing the farm, in a phone interview Tuesday.

Smithfield Farm Owner Says Friday s Loose Horse Is Not Hers

Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services reported that a horse got loose on Friday, April 2, and that its personnel returned it to Smithfield Farm, but farm owner Janice Foster said the horse is not hers. The incident occurred less than a week after the board of health rescinded the farm’s stable license based on several health and safety concerns including an unsecure horse chorale. According to Falmouth police, dispatch received a report of a horse loose in the backyard of a home at 850 Carriage Shop Road near Blueberry Lane. The home is adjacent to the farm property on Sandwich Road. Police notified MES, which captured the horse and returned it to Smithfield Farm.
