The Falmouth Fire Department responded Saturday, April 17, to a fuel spill at the Coonamessett Riverâs Upper Bogs near 154 Hatchville Road.
Crews contained much of the fuel with absorbent booms and by controlling the water flow while calling in backup from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services.
Fire and rescue crews arrived at 1:25 PM to the popular public walking area after people reported a sheen on the water. Falmouth Deputy Fire Chief Scott Thrasher was on scene and said they ascertained that a 30 gallon container that had been left near one of the water canals had been removed and in doing so, the contents spilled.
Falmouth Marine and Environmental Services reported that a horse got loose on Friday, April 2, and that its personnel returned it to Smithfield Farm, but farm owner Janice Foster said the horse is not hers.
The incident occurred less than a week after the board of health rescinded the farmâs stable license based on several health and safety concerns including an unsecure horse chorale.
According to Falmouth police, dispatch received a report of a horse loose in the backyard of a home at 850 Carriage Shop Road near Blueberry Lane. The home is adjacent to the farm property on Sandwich Road. Police notified MES, which captured the horse and returned it to Smithfield Farm.
