One person is dead after a fatal two-vehicle crash at Ramon Road and Vista Del Sol in Thousand Palms on Friday, according to Cal Fire.  Officer Jackie Quintero, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman, said a Honda Civic driven by a 30-year-old Hispanic male crossed over the double yellow line and hit the other vehicle head on killing the driver.  Two people suffered moderate to major injuries and were transported by hospitals by ambulance.  Alcohol appears to be a factor in the collision, but no other details were released.

Santa Monica woman killed in rollover crash near Palm Springs identified A woman killed when her SUV drifted off Highway 111 near Palm Springs and smashed into a fence was identified today as a Santa Monica resident. Martha Martinez, 61, was fatally injured at about 7 a.m. Tuesday south of Overture Drive when she lost control of her Ford Explorer for unknown reasons while driving in the southbound direction, according to the California Highway Patrol. Her SUV veered onto the dirt shoulder, traveling approximately 250 feet before smashing into a cable fence and rolling over, according to CHP Officer Jackie Quintero. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local gun shop collects over 700 toys for CHP’s CHiPs for Kids drive Guns of Distinction in Palm Desert teamed up with the California Highway Patrol to collect hundreds of toys for children in the Coachella Valley. CHP Officer Jackie Quintero said the store s manager called the department to let them know that customers had donated over 700 toys. Storm Jenkins, the owner of Guns of Distinction, said he simply put out an email to his clients and customers asking if they could drop off toys. He said he expected to only fill up one box but they exceeded expectations. I expected we might fill one box of toys, we ended up, as you can see, with something like 700 and we re not even done yet, Jenkins said. The response and the support from the CHP to get this done has been terrific.
