DHAKA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Zaber and Zubair Fabrics Ltd, a supplier of home textiles to major European retailers H&M and Lidl, is one of a growing band of Bangladeshi garment factories on a mission to clean up their act - and improve their bottom lines by going greener.
The business on the outskirts of Dhaka previously used large amounts of sulphuric acid to remove excess caustic, a chemical that strengthens fabric, from its waste water.
But in 2010, the factory installed two plants that recover from the water 95% of the caustic used to rinse the fabrics made into goods like sheets and pillow covers, saving 6.5 million litres of caustic soda annually as well as sulphuric acid.
The government has extended the closure of educational institutions till June 12, saying the reopening is subject to the drop in Covid infection rate below 5 percent and inoculation of university students. Curriculum being modified to improve standard of education: Dipu Moni

DHAKA, Jan 31, 2021 (BSS) – Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni today said the curriculum for students is being modified to improve the standard of education.
“In this regard, the government is giving significant importance on ICT education and technical-based education including infrastructural development and training for teachers,” she said.
She was speaking at an inaugural ceremony of imparting training of the master-trainers of the primary school teachers’ on English subject as the chief guest at a city hotel.
Putting emphasis on giving training to teachers, she said training is very much important for teachers as the condition of students, who are studying English as a mandatory subject, is not satisfactory.

The government has opened a discussion on resumption of the classes at schools on a limited scale from next month.
It is considering to take this year s Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate examinees to classrooms first, said a top official who attended a virtual meeting of high officials of the education and primary and mass education ministries yesterday. Implementation of these plans depends on approval from government high ups, the pandemic situation and directives of the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19, said the official.
