Apr 21, 2021 A young man was treated at UPMC Williamsport pm Monday night after being shot in the leg in or near Flanigan Park at Little League Boulevard and Walnut Street, city police confirmed. The victim’s identity was not released. No arrest has been made. Police responded to the park for a report of shots fired about 8:15 p.m., Capt. Justin Snyder said in a brief press release. “While on the scene, officers were able to locate evidence of a shooting, and canvassed the area for any witnesses,” Snyder said. A short time later, police received a call from the hospital reporting that a gunshot victim had arrived at the emergency room, Snyder said. The victim has since been discharged from the medical facility.

mmaroney@sungazette.com A veteran Williamsport Bureau of Police lieutentant claims in a federal lawsuit that he was passed over for promotions because he filed complaints on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 29 against anti-union activity. Lt. Steven Helm, supervisor of daywatch, this week asserted in the complaint in U.S. Middle District Court his rights to free speech were violated. The lawsuit identified Mayor Derek Slaughter, former Mayor Gabriel J. Campana and the City of Williamsport as defendants. Slaughter, who returned a telephone call for comment, said any statements regarding the lawsuit would need to come from J. David Smith or Austin White, the city solicitors and firm of McCormick Law.

Williamsport crimewatch website given positive recommendation | News, Sports, Jobs

mmaroney@sungazette.com A $6,000 a year residential and business surveillance camera registry that is on city police platform was given a positive recommendation Tuesday by City Council’s public safety committee. Crimewatch, if approved by City Council, will cost the city $3,000 a year, with half the cost paid for by Lycoming County District Attorney Ryan Gardner, city Police Chief Damon R. Hagan said. The interactive site includes a digital platform giving the ability to give police crime tips, provide the public information on how to and who to contact for specific crimes, and allow those with surveillance cameras to register their home and business cameras to assist police in solving crimes or investigations.
