Black Voices series wins five awards in state newspaper contest

SPRINGFIELD The Register-Mail earned five different Illinois Press Association awards for its Black Voices series in 2020.
The winners in the annual newspaper contest were announced Thursday. The Register-Mail earned 16 awards, with three of those being first place awards. The newspaper competes against small daily newspapers statewide.
The Black Voices series, a 10-part series providing in-depth interviews about race with members of the Black community, was recognized in two categories. The series, which ran from Aug. 2 through Oct. 4, received fourth place for news series and fourth place for Distinguished Coverage of Diversity. The diversity award was against Illinois newspapers across all divisions.
