(Mainichi/Koichi Uchida) SAITAMA Thirteen staff members at 11 elderly care facilities in Saitama Prefecture were misdiagnosed as positive for the coronavirus during mass polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for facilities employees, the Saitama Prefectural Government announced April 26. According to its elderly welfare division, the saliva-based tests on the 13 workers on April 21 wrongly came back positive. The errors were reportedly due to issues with new machines introduced by contractors. During tests on that day, 13 of 837 individuals undergoing PCR tests were positive for the coronavirus. Because the infection rate was high, contractors tested the remaining samples again. It was then that the errors became clear.

The prefectural police s first investigation division arrested Takahide Ikeda, 33, a sergeant at Hanyu Police Station s community affairs division who lives in the city of Hanyu. Ikeda allegedly attempted to touch the body of the woman in her 20s, who lives in the same prefecture, in a car at a parking lot of a commercial facility in the city at just after 1 p.m. on April 4. He was off-duty that day. He has apparently denied the allegation, and was quoted as saying, It s wrong. I won t talk now.
