True heroes offer inspiration through example

While a room filled with police officers and masked people can conjure images of a bank heist gone terribly wrong, there was an entirely different vibe coming out of Signatures at Bayside on Friday, May 7: one of appreciation. In what has undeniably been a trying year for nearly everyone on this spinning globe of ours, and a particularly difficult one for first-responders in our section of the world over the past several weeks, people gathered together for the Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards. It was a day to honor police, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs for their selfless and courageous efforts on behalf of our area citizenry, and, to some extent, a day to celebrate people just being together again, after more than a year of, well… not.

Fallen Selbyville fire company member Laura Madara laid to rest Sunday

Delaware News Journal Laura Madara s father stood up and saluted his daughter s coffin with a shaking hand as a sole bugle performed Taps Sunday at the woman s gravesite.   Madara, a Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company member and president of the Ladies Auxiliary, was killed on April 9 after a Selbyville Fire Police truck reversed into her on the scene of a separate vehicle crash. Madara s funeral services resulted in an outpouring of support from numerous different fire companies and departments.  About 100 law enforcement officials, family and friends were in attendance for Madara s funeral service. Fire engines from across the state flanked the path of the procession as residents stood on their front lawns to pay their respects.
