The Carl M. Freeman Foundation, in partnership with Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company, recently announced a $25,000 scholarship in memory of Laura Madara, the Selbyville VFC member who died while responding to a vehicle accident on April 9.
The Laura Madara First Responder Endowed Scholarship was announced at the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerceâs 2021 Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards on Friday, May 7. The annual scholarship will be administered by Delaware Technical Community College and will be for Sussex County women who are interested in pursuing a career or volunteering as a first-responder. The Carl M. Freeman Foundation is funding $15,000, and the Selbyville VFC has committed to a $10,000 match.

Laura Madara s father stood up and saluted his daughter s coffin with a shaking hand as a sole bugle performed Taps Sunday at the woman s gravesite.
Madara, a Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company member and president of the Ladies Auxiliary, was killed on April 9 after a Selbyville Fire Police truck reversed into her on the scene of a separate vehicle crash. Madara s funeral services resulted in an outpouring of support from numerous different fire companies and departments.
About 100 law enforcement officials, family and friends were in attendance for Madara s funeral service. Fire engines from across the state flanked the path of the procession as residents stood on their front lawns to pay their respects.
