AccessRewind: Gainesville places second Big Red Shootou

Mother Nature held off and cleared the skies for a busy Monday across the area. The Gainesville boys golf team placed second, behind Milton, in the Big Red Shootout at Chattahoochee Golf course, while Buford s Jackson Buchanan captured the individual high medalist honor in the Stableford points match.

Boys playoffs: Cherokee Bluff falls to Hart County, 70-

HARTWELL  No. 2 ranked Hart County used the 3-point shot to perfection in a 70-44 rout of Cherokee Bluff on Saturday in the second round of the Class 3A tournament on Saturday at home.  The Bulldogs scored 27 of their 31 points from behind the 3-point arc to take a 31-18 lead by halftime.  JC Curry scored 12 of his 19 points in the second quarter, and Shone Webb hit nine of his 23 points from 3-point land to set the pace for the Bulldogs in the win.  Dre Raven, Corey Thomas and Jaylon Justice netted 11 each to pace the Bears offensively. Shad Dabney finished with nine points. 

Boys soccer roundup: GHS, Johnson, Bluff, Lakeview all

GAINESVILLE  Gainesville used a strong defensive effort to knock Class 3A No. 4 West Hall 2-0 on Tuesday at City Park Stadium. It was the second straight win for the Red Elephants (4-3) who began the season ranked but have been battling injuries in the early part of the season. The loss snapped the Spartans (3-2) three-match win streak. The back four of Gainesville Ronald Penado, David Menchaca, Pablo Tamayo and Endy Alarcon along with David Esquivel and Sinuhe Zaragoza, who shared time in goal, kept West Hall, which had scored 17 goals during the win streak, at bay. The Red Elephants got goals from Aram Lara on a header from a corner kicked by Noe Vasquez and from Noe Vasquez on a penalty kick.

Region 7-3A boys: Dawson County blast Gilmer to make Cl

DAWSONVILLE  Dawson County cruised to a 79-41 win over Gilmer in the first round of the Region 7-3A tournament at the Ford Phillips Center on Thursday.  Joakeim Celestin led the Tigers with 15 points and helped them to advance to the semifinals of the tournament against No. 2 seed Cherokee Bluff on Saturday in Ellijay. The win also punched the Tigers ticket to the Class 3A state tournament later this month.  Celestin was one of four Tigers in double figures. Tyler Lane turned in the double-double performance with 13 points and 15 rebounds, while Ty Whitmire added 12 points and Jaden Gibson chipped in 10.
