At a press conference near the lake on the Friday before Memorial Day 2020, David Brown, the Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department, announced the launch of the Summer Operations Center (SOC), a multiagency gun-violence prevention hub. Brown said the center had a singular mission: Reducing murders and shootings this summer.
But internal documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request show that almost immediately after the SOC s creation, with the onset of citywide protests against racism and the police murder of George Floyd, the police department began using the violence-prevention center to monitor and share intelligence about political demonstrations. The police continued to use the SOC to surveil political organizing throughout the summer and fall even going so far as to quietly add protest monitoring to the center s stated mission.

CHICAGO A 73-year-old man with dementia went missing Saturday afternoon near 62nd Street and Western Avenue.. Chicago police have described him as a high-risk missing person.
Gildardo Rodgriguez, 70, was helping a family member move some stuff into a house around 2 p.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of South Artesian.

CHICAGO A second juvenile has been charged in connection with the double-carjacking that began at a sandwich shop June 6. A 17-year-old male was changed with one felony count of aggravated carjacking with a firearm.
During the early morning hours of June 6, in the parking lot of Subway, 3154 W. 103rd St., two women were sitting in their blue 2017 Kia Forte, when three men, described as male blacks in their late teens, approached the car pointing a handgun and shotgun at the women, demanding their vehicle, according to Chicago police.

Kenyon Washington is facing a first-degree murder charge as well as an armed robbery charge.
On Feb. 8. 2021, the detective, a 26-year veteran of the department, was investigating the scene of a
fatal shooting in the 7700 block of South Yates Boulevard when two individuals approached him from behind.
Police said one person had a gun and the other person had a knife. The two suspects pushed the detective from behind and assaulted him while rummaging through his pockets.
