An 18-year-old man arrested Tuesday is the second person charged in a February attack on a Chicago police detective working on a homicide investigation, police said.
Samuel Flowers was arrested at 6:45 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Lowe Avenue and is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon and a firearm, and aggravated battery of a police officer, authorities said. During a livestreamed hearing broadcast on YouTube Thursday, Judge Arthur Wesley Willis set Flowers’ bail at $1 million.

The Area 2 detective, who was in civilian clothing but carrying a binder embossed with the Chicago Police Department star, was canvassing the area as part of an investigation into a fatal shooting that happened the day before, prosecutors said.
The detective was hit in the back of his head and fell to the ground, prosecutors said. One of the pair allegedly pointed a handgun at the detective’s head and demanded his belongings.
They kicked the detective in his head and body as the officer yelled that he didn’t have anything on him, prosecutors said. Washington, 25, then “made a stabbing motion” toward the detective’s neck, prosecutors said.
