Each of us has our own signature breathing pattern; we inhale and exhale with a specific rhythm, and our two nostrils work in accordance with the sun and moon cycles. In yoga, great importance is given to breath. The right nostril is associated with the Surya Nadi, Pingala, signifying activity and the sympathetic nervous system. The left nostril is associated with the Chandra Nadi, Ida, signifying rest and repose and the parasympathetic nervous system. Every couple of hours the dominance pattern shifts, but there is also a marked difference between day and night. Overall, the right nostril is more dominant during the day, and the left nostril, at night.
