Credit: Twitter/Uttarakhand BJP Politics3 hours ago Dehradun: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday retained the Salt assembly constituency in Uttarakhand with Mahesh Jeena defeating Congress’s Ganga Pancholi by 4,697 votes in a bypoll to the seat. Snatching an early lead over his nearest rival, Jeena maintained it consistently up to the end of counting, garnering 21,874 votes against Pancholi’s 17,177, the Election Commission said quoting the returning officer of Almora. The BJP’s win is significant as it was the first election contested after Tirath Singh Rawat took over in March as the chief minister of the state.

Highlights The polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. 95,241 voters will cast their votes in the bypoll, out of which 48,682 are male and 46,559 female. Uttarakhand recorded the sharpest single-day spike of 2,402 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. New Delhi: Bypoll to the Salt Assembly seat in Almora district of Uttarakhand began on Saturday (April 17) at 7 am.  People were seen queuing up outside polling booths to exercise their franchise amid elaborate security arrangements. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful polling in the constituency, Almora District Magistrate Nitin Singh Bhadauria was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
