AHMEDABAD: “April is the cruellest month”: thus opens ‘The Waste Land’ of T S Eliot in 1922. The line finds grim resonance with Gujarat of 2021 in April, the state recorded 2.6 lakh cases and 2,600 deaths, accounting for 46% cases and 37% mortalities recorded during the entire pandemic so far.
To put the figure in perspective, from March 2020 to April 2021, Gujarat has recorded 5.67 lakh cases and 7,183 deaths. From January 1to March 31, Gujarat had recorded 62,644 cases and 213 deaths, which is 24% and 8% of what April alone recorded. In fact, the entire year of 2020 had recorded 2.45 lakh cases from March to December and had recorded 4,306 deaths.
Surat: K N Chavda, principal of J Z Shah Arts and HP Desai Commerce College, Amroli, was appointed as vice-chancellor of Veer Narmad Sought Gujarat University (VNSGU) on Friday. Chavda was among the frontrunners for the post that was held by in-charge VC Hemali Desai since August last year.
Desai was given charge of VC after the previous regular VC Shivendra Gupta’s term ended in August 2020. The three years term of Gupta had remained controversial as questions were raised against his educational qualification and his tainted service record as assistant engineer in the state government’s R&B department.

SURAT: A five-year-old daughter of a migrant worker from Madhya Pradesh was allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered in Hazira on Friday. The minor had severe injuries in the private part while she died after being hit with some blunt object on the head, police suspect.
The girl’s body was found in the bushes around 150 m away from her home. She was playing near her home and, at around 10 am, her mother realized that she was missing. After failing to locate her anywhere, she she informed her husband who was at his workplace at an industrial unit in Hazira.
Surat: With no respite in sight from the deadly virus, Diamond City on Friday recorded 1,737 new cases pushing the city’s tally to 90,445 so far. “As on Friday, 3,605 Covid-19 patients were under treatment in different hospitals in the city. About 47,900 people are under home quarantine in the city,” said an official of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials, adding that 16 patients also succumbed to the virus on Friday.
The victims included a 40-year-old man from Variyavi bazaar, a 42-year-old man from Kapodra, a 42-year-old woman from Vijaynagar, and a 49-year-old man from Nanpura in the city.
Of the fresh infections, Rander and Athwa zones continue to remain Covid hotspots reporting highest daily cases for the past few months. Athwa recorded 371 cases, while Rander recorded 377 on Friday.
Bharuch: The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital at Ankleshwar could have been a blessing for the Covid-19 patients of the region. The hospital has 150 normal beds, 25 ICU beds and five ventilators. But poor management, limited oxygen supply and shortage of medical staff has resulted in all the facilities being under-utilized.
Various industries in Bharuch produce more than 400 MT oxygen per day. The daily oxygen requirement of the district is estimated at around 45 MT. Still, there is shortage of oxygen at the ESIC Hospital. Incidentally, the 10 MT storage tank installed by Ankleshwar Industries Association isn’t in use since last 10 days due to non-availability of oxygen.
