Dallas residents eager for GED classes flocked to the library when classes restarted online

Dallas residents eager for GED classes flocked to the library when classes restarted online The pandemic shut down the in-person program but virtual courses removed barriers to access for students with children, work and other commitments. Betsy, left, and Gary Keep instruct a geometry lesson to this semester’s final virtual GED math class from their home in Dallas on Thursday, April 22, 2021. The Keeps are teachers with the Dallas Public Library s GED program, which is one of the few free programs and only options for economically disadvantaged students. Virtual classes began last May during the pandemic, and now online classes are thriving and enrollment is up 30%. It s a solution that the library thinks it will keep running with post-pandemic to increase access to GED classes at a time when more students are trying to reskill. (Lynda M. Pure gold in these tough times : The good side of consumers stories

We are inclined to focus on the bad news on this page. Week in, week out we highlight examples of bad customer service. That is because people are far more likely to send us complaints than praise. A couple of weeks back we asked for people’s good news stories. They were not slow coming in and some are so lovely, they’d bring a tear to your eye. Patrick O’Leary got in touch to share his experience of dealing with a company called Slated.ie. It sells tableware art pieces made from old roofing slate. “It’s got a deep personal connection for me,” O’Leary says. “I grew up in West Cork the son of a builder and farmer, who spent his weekends and after school on the farm, and his summers doing odds and ends on my dad’s building sites. These days I’m almost a million miles from that having been fortunate enough to grow up during the Celtic Tiger days, going to UCD and working my way up through technology companies to now live as a CTO in

Treating Depression May Eventually Be As Easy As An Over-The-Counter Stimulator

4:05 Francisco Romo-Nava, MD, Ph.D., a University of Cincinnati researcher, is continuing to enroll participants ages 18-55 who aren t currently on medication. He wants to determine whether they ll respond to electrical stimulation as a way to treat depression and other psychological illnesses. If we can fix that disturbance, we may be able to improve both the mental and physical health of patients, he says. Romo-Nava believes the interaction between the brain and the body is a self-regulating feedback circuit that is often disturbed in psychiatric disorders. UC says it is the first to study depression using electrical stimulation. Researchers attach electrodes to the back and shoulder and deliver stimulation for 20 minutes each, three times a week for eight weeks. Romo-Nava says participants will barely feel it and it won t hurt them.
