A budget to please some, ignore others

LAHORE: The federal budget for 2021-22 is full of promises based on ambitious increase in tax revenue. Government employees’ salaries have been increased by 10 percent, while minimum wage payable by the private sector increased by 13 percent.
Some budget measures have pleased those associated with trade and industry, but as far as the common man is concerned it contains nothing that could assure that there would be decline in prices.
In fact, the finance minister felt proud that wheat rates have increased globally by 54 percent and by only 29 percent in Pakistan. He conveniently ignored the fact that the increase in wheat rates was from last years’ high base, and if we compare the rates with a year earlier the increase is very high.
CM approves Rs 20,000 minimum wages for workers

LAHORE: Chief Minister Usman Buzdar on Labour Day has given approval to fix minimum wages at Rs 20,000.
Chairing a meeting in connection with providing relief to the labourers at the CM’s Office here on Saturday, the chief minister said the welfare of the labourers and workers was the top priority of the government and Punjab was the only province that had given approval to fix the minimum wages at Rs 20,000.
He said the PTI government in the last three years had increased Rs 5000 in the minimum wages of workers and would continue to increase the minimum wages of workers in future as well.
Officials caught manipulating zones to reduce tax, says civic commissioner
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has found that many property owners, in connivance with officials, have submitted incorrect information about the tax zone under which their property falls in an attempt to pay less tax.
BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad told reporters on Tuesday that 3.9 lakh such cases have been detected. The civic body is issuing notices to owners of all these properties. They will have to pay additional tax with penal interest.
Under the Self Assessment Scheme, citizens and officials have the option to indicate the tax zone and compute the property tax. There are six tax zones in BBMP limits.
