Professor who made Jomo Kenyatta face Mt Kenya East The Star Image: BENJAMIN NYAGAH
• President referred him to Bethwell Ogot, who advised lying low but he still published
He was a 27-year-old junior lecturer at the University of Nairobi when he was frogmarched to the presence of President Jomo Kenyatta blindfolded. This was 1971.
His crime? He had begun documenting the histories of Mt Kenya East communities. This angered the cabal around the president, who were enforcing a single cultural identity for the region.
Prof Mwaniki Kabeca says President Kenyatta was not amused and rebuked the politicians. He has since written at least 10 books, documenting the histories of Kirinyaga, Embu, Mbeere and Chuka communities. He is arguably the region’s most eminent historian alive.

Kenya: Vegetable prices up after heavy rainfall
A vegetable shortage has hit parts of Kenya’s Tharaka Nithi County. This has resulted in prices going up. In the county’s main commercial centre, Chuka town, wholesalers from neighboring Embu and Meru counties are selling their kale at more than three time the prices of last month. Chuka town residents are now turning to cabbages, which are also scarce and expensive.
Stella Fredrick, a trader in Chuka town, said that they are hesitant to buy the little available vegetables as customers are complaining of the increased prices. “Our business has deteriorated because of the acute shortage of vegetables, which has run for some weeks now and which is likely to continue up to July,” Ms Fredrick told businessdailyafrica.com. She attributed the shortage to prolonged heavy downpours, which are usually followed by very cold weather, destroying the vegetables.
