Beijing [China], May 18 (ANI): The uncontrolled re-entry of a China Long March rocket into Earth s atmosphere has spurred the calls for new policies to help mitigate the growing problem of space junk.
Early this month, the remnants of the Chinese rocket plunged into the Indian Ocean near the Maldives.
Most of the huge Long March 5B rocket, however, burned up on reentering the atmosphere, the China Manned Space Engineering Office said in a post on WeChat, before it landed just west of the Maldives.
The rocket, which was about 108 feet tall and weighs nearly 40,000 pounds, had launched a piece of a new Chinese space station into orbit on April 29.

Ending anxious wait of millions of people around the world, Chinese state media said debris of Long March 5B rocket fell into Indian Ocean on Sunday morning after re-entering Earth s atmosphere. The rocket parts disintegrated over waters the remnants now lie scattered west of the Maldives archipelago, Chinese space agency said.
Space-Track, which reports data collected by US Space Command, confirmed the rocket was no longer in the orbit. Everyone else following the #LongMarch5B re-entry can relax. The rocket is down. NASA denounced China for "failing to meet responsible standards" after debris from an uncontrolled rocket re-entered Earth's atmosphere late Saturday evening.Chinese state media, citing the China Manned Space Engineering Office, reported that the debris landed in the Indian Ocean, west of the Maldives, according to Reuters.Most of the debris burned in the atmosphere, the office added.The U.S. Space Command confirmed the rocket's re-entry on.
