Redding Record Searchlight
The National Weather Service warns North State residents will see temperatures so high this weekend, they re considered dangerous to people s and animals health.
The NWS issued excessive heat warnings for Northern California s interior, in effect Friday afternoon through Monday night. Temperatures over the weekend are forecast to go as high as 116 degrees in the Sacramento Valley, and well above 100 degrees in the foothills. Mountain temperatures could reach 105 degrees.
Hottest temperatures arriving Saturday and Sunday could shatter daily record highs, said NWS meteorologist Scott Rowe in Sacramento.
Redding could reach 116 degrees both days. That would beat previous records set on July 10, 2002 (115 degrees) and July 11, 1999 (114 degrees), Rowe said.
How to keep your pets cool
TheHumane Society of America and ASPCA warn pets can also get sick or die from heat-related illnesses.
Animals with flat faces/short muzzles Persian cats, pugs, boxers, shih tzus, etc. can t pant as effectively as other breeds. They and elderly or overweight animals, and those with heart or lung diseases are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
To help protect animals:
Keep pets indoors and in air conditioning as much as possible.
Never leave a pet in a car. Even leaving them in an open vehicle for a couple of minutes can be dangerous in high heat.

Two fires burning in Siskiyou County this week prompted evacuations in communities southeast and east of Yreka.
Both the Lava Fire and the Tennant Fire grew overnight, fueled by high temperatures and low humidity levels, dry fuels like brush and winds blowing through the valley.
Those conditions expected to last throughout the week, rugged terrain and lack of water in the immediate vicinity are making firefighting efforts more difficult.
