BARNARD GRIFFIN…2020 WINERY OF THE YEAR - The Blue Collar Wine Guy

The Blue Collar Wine Guy By stanthewineman on December 26, 2020 at 12:05 PM Living in the San Juan Islands, I have been on a Washington State ferry many times. When I was a kid, I marveled at the ferries. I loved the scenery and watching the boat dock at each island. Watching the emerald green water being churned up as the ferry docked and left was mesmerizing. These days I just ride it, often not even looking out at the beautiful view that passes by, and I certainly don’t go out and watch it dock. When we see something all the time, we tend to forget just how we felt about it the first time we experienced it. I will say that some mornings when I’m sitting on a ferry, I look out the window as the islands pass by and I really understand why I live in this beautiful part of the world. It is always good to reflect on things that we once appreciated, no matter how long it’s been around.

Here are some value options ideal for the holidays | Wine Guy

Most of us indulge during the holidays. Waistlines expand and bank accounts shrink. So it helps to have less expensive, everyday wine options. That means ready-to-drink wines that deliver varietal accuracy, clean fruit and a sense of character for $25 or less. With the following brands, you’ll swear the wines are worth more than you paid. Most are 2017, 2018 or 2019 vintage. • Avalon. This Sonoma, Calif.-based winery produces solid appellation wines Lodi cabernet sauvignon, Flint & Steel Napa Valley sauvignon blanc, Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon and California-designated chardonnay and pinot noir. ($10-$20) • Bonterra. A pioneer in organics and biodynamics since 1987, look for chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier, rosé, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir and zinfandel with most of the grapes from Mendocino vineyards. ($14-$16)
