Last week we covered smaller public schools in our area. You can read that article in the Chattanoogan archives. Let’s move on to part two of the spring football tour.
Region 4-5A
Not enough good things can be said about the state of Walker Valley football. Coach Drew Akins has not only resurrected the program, but he has also transformed the Mustangs into a legitimate contender. In 2020, the Mustangs scored 39+ points in six of their eight wins. Plus, they proved they can win low-scoring defensive battles, evident by their playoff upset over #2 Powell.
FCA Annual Day Of Champions To Be Held May 16 Wednesday, May 12, 2021
Chattanooga FCA to Host Annual Day of Champions Sunday, May 16 The Greater Chattanooga Fellowship of Christian Athletes will host its annual Day of Champions event Sunday, May 16 at 3 PM at Ridgedale Baptist Church. At this event, the ministry will announce several award winners, most notably the 2021 FCA Christian Athlete of the Year.
Since 1965, the local FCA chapter has chosen a senior athlete nominated by their local school’s FCA sponsor for this award based on their character, leadership, and involvement with FCA. The winner will receive a college scholarship from the Gerald Sinkfield Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mr. Sinkfield was a prominent high school and college athlete who loved the FCA ministry and served on the Chattanooga FCA board for many years.

It’s a Senior Day celebration that 18-year-old Breanna Sexton will never forget.
They honored four young ladies who are nearing the end of their high school softball career at Silverdale Baptist Academy on Saturday afternoon, but it was Sexton who might have the most positive memory after slugging the game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to propel her team to victory.

Thursday night was senior night at Silverdale Baptist Academy and the Seahawks lone senior, Evan Padgett, got the start on the mound. Padgett’s mother threw out the game’s honorary first pitch and tossed a strike. Her son then mimicked her effort to start the game..
Padgett quickly dispatched the first three batters in Lookout Valley’s lineup, getting two to pop out and coaxing an easy out at first on the third. During their first at bat of the night the Seahawks were more effective than their opponents, picking up three hits and four runs on Yellow Jackets’ starter Christian Chandler.
Winners Of Young Southern Student Writers Contest Announced Tuesday, April 20, 2021
Southern Lit Alliance’s Young Southern Student Writers contest announces its winners. While there were 300 winners from local area schools, two outstanding entries by Carolyn Henley and Leila Babb from Silverdale Baptist Academy have won the overall Verbie and Hugh Prevost awards for their poems. Carolyn and Leila are in 11th and 10th grade, respectively.
A video will later be shared of some of this year’s winners reading their entries, and medals will be sent to each school of the 300 winners. Carolyn and Leila will each win a $250 cash prize for their achievement.
