LUDHIANA: Protests by multiple groups left Ludhiana-Delhi National Highway in a state of chaos. Long queues of vehicles, fuming passengers and hassled traffic police personnel could be seen as farmers’ union members joined the protest staged by temporary employees seeking regularisation.
President, Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) Punjab, Rajinder Benipal said temporary employees of some departments and teachers staged a protest near Sirhind Canal on Saturday and they (farmers unions) supported them.
“Demands of teachers should have been agreed to long ago by the government as they provide education to children. We supported them the way they supported us,” said BKU Punjab president.

Chandigarh, April 30 : Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Friday directed the Water Resources Department to identify more areas for relining of canals to check seepage and save the precious water resource.
Underlining the need for urgent replacement of 72 abandoned tubewells in the Kandi belt to augment irrigation facilities in the region, the Chief Minister directed Chief Secretary Vini Mahajan to allocate the necessary funds for these on priority.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Water Resources Department has announced the Rotational Programme of irrigation for the Rabi Season through canals from 10th to 17th February, 2021. The channels of Sirhind Canal System would run on the priority basis from Abohar Branch, Patiala Feeder, Bist Doab Canal, Sidhwan Branch and Bathinda Branch respectively.
Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson of the Water Resources department said that Ghaggar Link and its off-taking Channels i.e. Ghaggar Branch and Patiala Minor in group ‘B’ being in the first preference will run to their indent and the balance water supplies available will be utilized in the direct distributaries of Bhakra Main Line (BML) in Group ‘A’.
Ludhiana: A girl aged 10 died, while her maternal grandparents were injured when a gravel-laden tipper truck overturned on their hut near Machhiwara. Fog had blinded the driver.
Sulekha of Gari Tarkhana near Machhiwara was the victim, while her grandparents are Bablu and Ramaiah Devi. The tipper was headed to the Gadhi bridge on the Sirhind Canal from Machhiwara around 10am when it first hit a tree in the fog and then overturned on the roadside hut, burying the sleeping poor family in gravel.
In 20 minutes, the migrant workers from the slum pulled out Ramaiya Devi and Bablu and moved them to the Samrala civil hospital, while Sulekha suffocated to death.
