Schoolboy, 16, whose body was found in woodland died of asphyxiation , inquest hears

A schoolboy who was found dead in woodland after he was reported missing by his parents died of asphyxiation, an inquest opening heard today. Police discovered the body of 16-year-old Lucas Webb off Covet Lane near Canterbury, Kent at around 11.30am on December 13.  Parents Colin and Alison had reported the sixth-form student missing after he was last seen at around 1.30pm the previous day. But today a brief inquest opening in Maidstone, Kent heard that Lucas, who lived in the sleepy village of Barham, died of asphyxiation.   Assistant Coroner for North East Kent Joanne Andrews adjourned the hearing for a full inquest at 10am on April 9 at County Hall, Maidstone.

In Lucas’ 16 years of life, he proved that he had a talent for learning and achieving, they said. Highly self-motivated, he adored all things science related and was an inspiration to many of his peers who respected his drive, humour and creativity.

Search and rescue team wins school science contest The Bright Spark Awards 2020 contest has revealed the most enterprising young scientists in Kent schools. Bright Spark Awards Champions 2020: Submersible Search and Rescue System Team from Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys, Canterbury. Organisations judging the youngsters’ entries were Pfizer – whose COVID-19 vaccine in collaboration with BioNTech began its UK rollout out last week – along with Kent Renewable Energy, Integrated Technologies Ltd (ITL), Discovery Park, BAE Systems Rochester, Global Associates, Megger, Golding Homes, and EDF Energy. The Bright Spark Awards Champions’ Trophy and £500 cash prize went to a group from Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury. They designed a Submersible Search and Rescue System to detect debris or bodies in the water, narrowing the search area and cutting response time for accidents in open water.
