Gatlinburg approves second reading of budget

City considers traffic light system

GATLINBURG — The city is looking to improve its traffic signalization and considered a proposal during budget discussions this week. City manager Cindy Cameron Ogle presented a memo from Police Chief Randy Brackins about a traffic light signalization system. The system would allow for traffic counting, synchronization system, and computerization of all signals on Parkway, River Road and Hwy. 321. “Twelve lights will be computerized,” Ogle said. The total cost would be $350,000. That includes $262,000 for traffic camera detection; $45,000 for fiber optic connection; $275 for cellular connection; $27,925 for signal controllers with cabinets; $4,800 for programming and coordination data; and $10,000 for software and operating computer. This system is separate from a traffic study the city has planned, but Ogle said the study will likely recommend such a system.

Gatlinburg uses record year to fund $15 million in projects

GATLINBURG — After a dismal economic performance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City didn’t just rebound but exploded in tax revenue generated, and officials are proposing to use that money to fund a number of capital projects in the new fiscal year 2021-2022 budget. During a presentation to the City Commission, City Manager Cindy Cameron Ogle said tax revenue streams at the end of FY 2021 were 80% or more above budget estimates. The City Commission is set to vote on the first of three readings of the budget at their regular meeting at 6 p.m. today in City Hall. Ogle said she’s presented a lot of budgets over her tenure, but this is one of the best she’s ever been able to show commission.
