Chandigarh, April 9 : With the Centre rejecting Punjab s demand for continuation of payment through arhtiyas and exemption from the direct benefit transfer (DBT) system, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday asked Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to tell why he had kept the farmers and the arhtiyas in the dark.
The party also demanded that the more than 50 per cent hike in fertilizer prices announced by the Central government be rolled back immediately and asked the Chief Minister why he was not opposing this measure aimed at punishing farmers for protesting against the three agricultural laws forcefully.

NEW DELHI: A day before wheat procurement would commence in Punjab, the payment for which would be made directly to the farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has accused the ruling Amarinder Singh government of surrendering to the Modi government at the Centre.
SAD also alleged that Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh had kept the farmers and arhatiyas in the dark on the scheme and said he was playing a fixed match with the Modi dispensation.
Punjab procures wheat and rice at minimum support price (MSP) on behalf of the Centre under the National Food Security Act. So far, MSP to farmers in Punjab has been paid through arhatiyas . However, starting April 10, when wheat procurement will begin in the state, the payment will be made directly to farmers bank accounts under the DBT scheme.
