THE WASHINGTON POST – In the Star Wars universe, the High Republic is the stuff of legend. But someone had to write the story.
It all started with a vague reference from Obi-Wan Kenobi. “For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic,” Obi-Wan explained in 1977’s
Star Wars: A New Hope. “Before the dark times. Before the Empire.”
In the decades since those words were uttered, movies, books and television have explored nearly every imaginable facet of the Star Wars universe. But this particular period in the galaxy’s past remained in the realm of conjecture.

“People told us we were mad,” says Rainbird, recalling the reaction to their audacious plans to build a network of studios fitted with state-of-the-art technology.
“They said it’s not a proven asset class; it’s high risk. And now look at it. Now it’s the golden child, the chosen one, the cherry on the cake of property and suddenly it’s cool.”
Leading the charge in this crusade is the pair’s three-year-old business, The Creative District Improvement Company (TCDI Co). Last month, it submitted plans for the £15m redevelopment of the iconic Twickenham Studios, where scenes for Blade Runner, The Italian Job and Zulu were shot, and it is currently working up plans to deliver new studio facilities at heritage sites in Ashford and Liverpool.

When cinephiles hear the surname Lucas, the first person who invariably springs to mind is George, the man who created the “Star Wars” franchise, and in the process changed mainstream American cinema forever. But while his movie successes are undeniably impressive, there’s one achievement that was always just beyond him. Despite receiving Best Director and Best Writing nominations for both “American Graffiti” and “Star Wars,” Lucas has never won an Oscar, but another member of his family has.
