Charles Co prioritizes kids for COVID-vaccination events

Kids 12 and older will be given priority registration at the following events. Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at La Plata High School (6035 Radio Station Road in La Plata). May 26 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Westlake High School (3300 Middletown Road in Waldorf). June 2 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Henry E. Lackey High School (3000 Chicamuxen Road in Indian Head). June 8 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Thomas Stone High School (3785 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf). Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine will be administered at these events, which will be held inside the gym or cafeteria. Parents with any questions about the Pfizer vaccine or these vaccination events can call the Health Department at 301-609-6717.

Monday, June 14: two-hour early dismissal for all students (in-person and virtual/report card preparation time for teachers). This is the last day of in-person school for students who attend school on Mondays and Tuesdays (A-Day students/last names A-K). These students attend school virtually on June 15.

Charles County Board of Education Approves First Charter School in Charles County | Southern Maryland News Net

The Board of Education voted on April 26 to approve the first charter school in Charles County. The Phoenix International School of the Arts (PISOTA) will open in the 2022-2023 school year as a middle school serving Grades 6-7 and expand the following year to include Grades 6-8. Located in Waldorf, the school will count as the school system’s ninth middle school.

State association names Wade school counselor as Maryland Elementary School Counselor of the Year | Southern Maryland News Net

April 21, 2021 Constance Johnson, a school counselor at William B. Wade Elementary School, was recently named the Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the Maryland School Counselor Association. When Johnson started with Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) in 2014, she split her time between Wade and C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School before beginning at Wade fulltime at the start of the 2015-16 school year. At Wade she is the counselor for kindergarten, third, fourth and fifth grades. Despite her love of the job, it wasn’t one Johnson was planning on when she was in school she earned her bachelor’s from American University and master’s from Johns Hopkins University. She wanted to work in communications with a focus on political advocacy. She was with a communications firm for a couple of years that worked with the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which collects, analyzes and publishes statistics related to education.

April 1, 2021 Five Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) art teachers were recently recognized by the Maryland Art Education Association (MAEA) as outstanding educators. The association named three teachers as CCPS Career Art Educators of the Year. They are Kristina Blakeslee of Maurice J. McDonough High School; Christine Chinault of Malcolm Elementary School; and Gayle Kraus of Piccowaxen Middle School. Christin Downie of the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center and Caroline Metcalfe of Indian Head Elementary School were named CCPS Novice Art Educators of the Year by the MAEA. Blakeslee has been at McDonough for 10 years where she teaches freshmen through seniors in Art 1, Painting 1 and 2, Ceramics 1 and 2, sculpture, and advanced placement art and design.
