It was a typical snow-covered winter day, but something very atypical was happening cabbages, broccoli and even strawberries were improbably green and alive in a northeast Minneapolis backyard.
“It’s working,” said Greg Strong of the garden he tends several times a week. “It’s very warm, the plants are growing.”
“It” is Sophia, the nickname for an experimental garden project built by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. Sophia is a walipini, a South American word for a sunken, solar-heated greenhouse with earthen walls. Strong and his fellow gardeners are optimistic that Sophia will become a prototype for how to grow food in harsh climates.
Lawton then forced three flyouts to get out of the early jam. From there, the game turned into a pitchers’ duel between Lugo and Lawton.

For the next five innings, Lawton and Lugo blanked the hitters they faced on the scoreboard. Lugo ended up pitching five innings and striking out four while giving up only three hits.
In the circle for the Eagles, Lawton only made it three hits, but outside of the first inning, she gave up no hits or runs. The game held at 2-0 for six innings until the Gators got an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

The non-conference matchup falls between Gators’ series against Alabama and an upcoming series against South Carolina.

Florida took games one and two on Friday and Saturday but couldn’t finish off the sweep, losing to the Tide 4-2 on Sunday. The series marked the Gators’ first SEC action in nearly two weeks, but they didn’t show much rust, outscoring Alabama 13-6 over the weekend.
Although she took the loss on Sunday, Elizabeth Hightower pitched 11 innings over the weekend and gave up only one earned run. The three other runs she gave up on Sunday came from a variety of errors and defensive miscues.
