AFSCME 3299 condemns alleged use of police during UC labor dispute

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, or AFSCME Local 3299, launched a campaign condemning UC administration for alleged use of police force on a UC worker due to a language barrier. The worker one out of more than 27,000 people represented by the union allegedly lived with roommates who had tested positive for COVID-19, according to UCPD Lieutenant Sabrina Reich. An AFSCME Local 3299 campaign letter alleges that UC management gave the worker instructions to leave and quarantine, but put “minimal effort” into communicating the message. As a result, the campaign letter added that the worker did not understand the COVID-19 protocol and arrived to work during his next scheduled shift at Dwinelle Hall on Jan. 18.

Her priorities as a senatorial candidate include expanding environmental justice and intersectional education, as well as fostering a stronger network within the eco-community. Madapoosi’s platform is shaped by her experiences of feeling like an “imposter” for not fitting in with the common definition of what an environmentalist is. However, through her involvement in campus environmental organizations, such as the Students of Color Environmental Collective, she has developed her own narrative of what an environmentalist is.

ASUC talks student health insurance plan, Sproul Reformation Project Lisi Ludwig/File According to University Health Services, or UHS, spokesperson Tami Cate, UHS is thinking about increasing the deductible, or price students pay for outside health care, from $300 to $500. Cate indicated that UHS will be communicating with both the Student Health Advisory Committee and the Disabled Students Program about the potential change. At the ASUC’s general meeting Wednesday, University Health Services, or UHS, officials discussed changes to the student health insurance plan. Better known as SHIP, the main change the officials are recommending this year is to the deductible, which is the amount students pay upon seeking care outside of UHS, according to UHS spokesperson Tami Cate. They are considering increasing the price from $300 to $500, which would allow UHS to lower the premium by about 2.5%.
