Urban design study envisions walking made easier in Vancouver s historic Gastown
Leaders in Vancouver’s Gastown neighbourhood are asking the public to comment on what the community should look like in the future, and how space in the neighbourhood can be reclaimed for public use.

There has been a lot of talk about Gastown coming out of Vancouver city hall over the last decade, but not much action. So the Gastown Business Improvement Society decided to do its own urban design study.
It was released Friday. Among its recommendations: Activating and animating Gastownâs alleys by opening businesses in them, installing artwork and/or plants, and maybe cutting down on the giant garbage bins.

âWeâre in talks with the city, businesses and residents about whether we can have more of a central waste system,â said Walley Wargolet of the improvement society. âCan we get away from having 25 bins in each of the alleyways to make them more palatable to people walking through them?â
