BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) If you live in the community, you have the right to vote. A New York law passed last month makes that clear for people living on parole. This is a win in the fight for re-enfranchisement. According to activists and experts, the next step is to allow people currently incarcerated to vote.
Because Black people are disproportionately represented in prison populations, laws denying prisoners the right to vote have largely impacted Black communities. Since African Americans gained the right to vote, there have been efforts to suppress or deny the Black vote. Felony disenfranchisement remains a hurdle for civil rights.
Long-haul truck drivers are among the nation’s essential workers, but finding time to get the vaccine is difficult when you are traveling across the country daily to deliver critical items.

BINGHAMTON, NY (WSKG) On April 3, 2009, 13 people were killed in a mass shooting at the American Civic Association in Binghamton.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” said ACA Board President Angela Leach following the attack. “Whatever drove this individual to do what he did, I cannot possibly fathom. But we will come out of our grief and sadness more resolute in our mission, and more dedicated than ever to help people realize the dream of American citizenship.”
