On smoke visible in the air in parts of western Nevada County Tuesday, Sam Longmire, an air pollution control specialist with the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District, said there appeared to be smoke drifting from Mariposa County.
Longmire said the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District will continue to monitor the River Fire a wildfire in Mariposa County which had burned 9,500 acres as of Tuesday, according to Cal Fire in addition to others in the state.
The air management district extended a joint air quality health advisory Tuesday with the Plumas County Public Health Agency, warning that smoke from the Beckwourth Complex Fire and other northern California wildfires would bring the possibility of poor air quality conditions in that area.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures in the mid-90s by Thursday, and triple digits throughout the weekend a danger for wildfire and people with already existing cardio-pulmonary disease.
“It’ll be especially hot for the foothills because overnight cooling will only get down to the mid- to high 70s,” said Cory Mueller, National Weather Service meteorologist. “It’s typical for the foothills to cool down to an average low of 57 degrees, so you’ll be well above average.”
Mueller cautioned people to guard against heat exhaustion. Symptoms can include dizziness, fainting, excessive sweating, pale and clammy skin, and muscle cramps.
