DENVER â A yearling female who had a chicken feeder stuck around her neck was freed after two bystanders managed to get her up a tree before Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) rangers could remove the bear and release it back into the wild.
While black bear sightings are a regular occurrence this time of year as they hunt for food in preparation for winter hibernation, the sighting in Boulder County is another reminder that living, playing or visiting Colorado bear country requires being bear aware.
People planning overnight trips at Chapman Campground are now restricted to using hard-sided campers or trailers because the area has become a popular food source for one black bear in particular.
The U.S. Forest Service also announced Wednesday that day-use at Chapman, which is located in the upper Fryingpan River Valley, is prohibited.
The restrictions are expected to remain in place for two weeks, according to Shelly Grail, recreation manager for the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District. Refunds for reservations made during that period can be obtained through recreation.gov, which handles advance campsite bookings for Chapman, she said.

Jayce Peterson Sent To Prison For Stealing Campground Fees Using Welder’s Torch

DENVER (CBS4) Typically working at night, Jayce Peterson draped a tarp to hide the bright light from an oxy-acetylene welding torch and cut the locks off metal tubes used to collect fees at recreation areas in northwestern Colorado.
This, during the summer of 2018. Peterson hit 20 locations in the first two weeks of his operation. Several he struck more than once.
Thursday, a federal judge sentenced him to 15 months in prison.
In his plea agreement, Peterson agreed to stealing the money inside the fees tubes as well as numerous surveillance cameras placed at the sites to monitor such activity.
