Meal-kit company My Food Bag arrived in 2013, and has quickly grown to become one of New Zealand s biggest grocery operations. After talking about listing on the stock exchange for the past three years, the company is a step closer to that reality. Aimee Shaw reports

The new Tax Law Center at NYU Law aims to protect and strengthen the tax system
The newly formed Tax Law Center at NYU Law will focus on tax law issues that have profound implications for the government, businesses, and individuals. The center will be hosted by NYU Law, whose pioneering Graduate Tax Program has long recognized how tax-related issues affect all aspects of society.
The Tax Law Center will seek to protect and strengthen the nation’s tax system through rigorous, high-impact legal work in the public interest. The new center’s work will include offering technical input on tax legislation, submitting comments on tax regulations, and intervening in tax litigation, with the goals of protecting and improving the integrity of the tax system, saving and raising revenues, and advancing equity.
2020 biggest earning year for investment bankers on New Zealand deals

Bankers raked in nearly half a billion in fees from New Zealand businesses last year through capital raisings, refinancing and merger & acquisition deals, despite the country dropping into recession. Figures from financial research firm Refinitiv show US$348 million ($490m) was paid out in investment banking fees in 2020, up 76 per cent on the prior year and the highest amount paid out in the last 20 years of data supplied.

The second highest year was 2011, just two years after the Global Financial Crisis hit when New Zealand was in the midst of a local collapse of its property and mezzanine finance industry. That year saw US$255m in fees paid.

Two creditors pursued a bankruptcy process against Zhong personally: A residential property investment company called General Growth Group Ltd and Fang Sun, a significant business associate of Zhong s. The main creditor pursuing the bankruptcy proceedings over $2m of debt was General Growth Group, while Sun was a supporting creditor who had joined the action.

Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong was killed in her home in late November. Associate Judge Dani Lee Gardiner heard the case at the High Court in Auckland on Tuesday morning. Appearing for General Growth Group was Auckland lawyer Robert Hucker, while Chapman Tripp senior associate Janko Marcetic represented Sun.
