The letter was produced after Zhong reported being the subject of threats and intimidation on April 15, 2020. It says her case had been referred to the officer in charge of the “enquiries section” at Ormiston Police Station, the eastern area headquarters of Counties Manukau District. A police spokesman wouldn’t comment on what action was taken after Zhong made the report in April. The letter does not name who allegedly made the threats.

Police are yet to make an arrest nearly three weeks since the embattled entrepreneur was murdered – and investigators continue to say little publicly about the progress of their enquiries. Meanwhile, more new information has emerged on the desperate final months of Zhong, 55, as her wine and film-making businesses and personal finances crumbled under debts totalling well over $10 million.
Two creditors pursued a bankruptcy process against Zhong personally: A residential property investment company called General Growth Group Ltd and Fang Sun, a significant business associate of Zhong s. The main creditor pursuing the bankruptcy proceedings over $2m of debt was General Growth Group, while Sun was a supporting creditor who had joined the action.

Elizabeth (Ying) Zhong was killed in her home in late November. Associate Judge Dani Lee Gardiner heard the case at the High Court in Auckland on Tuesday morning. Appearing for General Growth Group was Auckland lawyer Robert Hucker, while Chapman Tripp senior associate Janko Marcetic represented Sun.
