BHUBANESWAR: Age has never been a deterrent for Shanti Devi. At the age of 17, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, she left college and moved to Koraput district with an aim to work for the poor in one of the most backward regions. She was accompanied by her husband Dr Ratan Das, for helping the poor.
Today at the age of 86, she continues to follow the path of Bhave s Bhoodan movement and strives to ensure that every person from poor socio-economic background in Rayagada and Koraput districts has a piece of land to call his own.
Rayagada/Gunupur: Known for her philanthropic activities and for dedicating her life for the cause of social work for seven long decades, Shanti Devi from Koraput district is one of the several Padma Shri awardees of 2021.
This feisty 87 years old Shanti Devi is a household name in undivided Koraput district. Born April 18, 1934, she was greatly influenced by the ideology of Vinoba Bhave. She along with her husband Ratan Dash shifted to Koraput district. Then she was 17 years old. The couple first set up an
ashram at a tribal-dominated village Khambesu Shankalpadar in 1951. The couple dedicated their lives for the betterment of orphaned children and distressed women. In 1955, she joined Vinoba Bhave’s Bhudan Movement. It is her indomitable spirit to offer every minute of her life for social activities that has earned her the moniker ‘Koraputia Gandhi’ (Koraput’s Gandhi).

New Delhi, Jan 26: As many as six personalities from Odisha is all set to receive Padma awards for their notable contributions towards the welfare of society. Sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo is also one among the the six to receive the award for his contribution to the field of art.
Five others from the state to receive the Padma Shri include Shanti Devi (social work), Purnamasi Jani (art), Rajat Kumar Kar (literature and education), Nanda Prusty (literature and education) and Dr Krishna Mohan Pathi (medicine). I dedicate this award to the people of Odisha. I had never expected that I would receive the award at the age of 83. I am thankful to the Centre and the state government, said sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo.
BHUBANESWAR: Noted sculptor Sudarshan Sahoo has been selected for Padma Vibhushan award 2021, for his exceptional and distinguished service in the field of art. Five other eminent persons from Odisha have been selected for Padma Shri awards. The Centre announced Padm Awards- the highest civilian awards of India on Monday.
Thanking the government for the recognition 83-year-old Sahu said, “I am dedicating this award to Lord Jagannath and the people of Odisha. At the last leg of my life I cannot expect anything more than this honour. I am humbled and grateful to the government for this recognition, which will certainly help in motivating many talented artists, who are quitting this traditional work.” Expressing concern over the preservation and protection of monuments in the state, Sahoo urged the state government to take steps for the protection and promotion of art and culture in the state.

In a rare surgery, a cyst of the shape of egg was removed from the brain of a woman at a hospital in Faridabad. The cyst weighed almost 200 gm.
Forty-one-year-old Shanti Devi, a native of Ballabhgarh in Haryana, had approached the doctors with complaints of severe headache and weakness on the right side of her body. She was unable to stand or walk without support.
