Wilk Announces Bill Allowing Public Input For CEMEX Mega-Mine
On Wednesday, State Senator Scott Wilk , R-Santa Clarita, announced that Senate Bill 520 passed out of its first policy committee, and if ratified would let the public weigh in on large projects approved more than 30 years before they are constructed.
Wilk, of the 21st Senate District, announced Wednesday that SB 520 passed out of its first policy committee, with the bill reportedly allowing public input to projects approved more than 30 years before existence, such as the controversial CEMEX mega-mine project.
“I am happy to report that SB 520 passed out of the Senate Natural Resources & Water Committee with unanimous support,” said Wilk. “The Committee agreed that 30 years is more than enough time to reevaluate the impact of CEMEX’s mega-mine on the Soledad Canyon community.”
Lancaster Man Killed In 14 Freeway Motorcycle Crash Near Acton
A Lancaster man was killed in a 14 Freeway motorcycle crash in Acton Tuesday evening.
Around 7:40 p.m. Tuesday first responders received reports of a traffic collision on the northbound 14 Freeway near Santiago Road in Acton, said Franklin Lopez, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
“It came in as a motorcycle down,” Lopez said.
For reasons still under investigation, the motorcyclist veered to the left and collided with a metal guardrail, said Officer Monique Mischeaux, spokesperson for the Antelope Valley Area CHP Office.
The motorcyclist was ejected from the bike and sustained fatal injuries, according to officials.
Wanted Man Caught After Running Red Light In Valencia
A wanted man was arrested Friday when a deputy located pepper spray in his vehicle after the suspect allegedly ran a red light in Valencia.
Around 10 p.m. Friday, a deputy patrolling McBean Parkway near the entrance to the Westfield Valencia Town Center Mall observed a vehicle that failed to stop at a red traffic light, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
“During a traffic stop to warn or cite the driver, the deputy learned the male driver had an active outstanding warrant to his name,” Arriaga said.
I-5 Freeway Closed Due To Snow In Grapevine
Both directions of the I-5 Freeway have been closed for an unknown duration Monday night due to snow in the Grapevine north of Castaic.
As of 8:00 p.m. Monday, all lanes of the I-5 Freeway have been closed through the Grapevine due to snow, according to Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office.
“(We) closed the 5 Freeway due to impassable snow on the summit, full closure happens shortly after 8 p.m. tonight,” said Greengard.
Southbound traffic is being diverted off at Grapevine Road in Kern County, and northbound traffic is being diverted off at Parker Road in Castaic, according to California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) officials.
Garcia Now Accepting Submissions For Annual Arts Competition
Congressman Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, announced Monday that he is accepting student artwork submissions for the annual Congressional Art Competition.
The yearly Congressional Arts Competition is now accepting new submissions as of Monday, March 15, according to officials from Garcia’s office.
“I am excited to announce the commencement of the 2021 Congressional Art Competition,” Garcia said in a statement Monday. “This is my first time hosting this competition as a Member of Congress and I couldn’t be more thrilled to see what the creative students from California’s 25th District come up with.”
