March 12 For native Santa Feans, the field trip to the watershed in 5th grade epitomizes outdoor learning. But recently, few students have made their enduring visit with the Santa Fe Watershed Association. We haven t been able to do in-person field trips since fall of 2019, says Morika Hensley, director of planning, education and restoration at the association. Field trips make up the bulk of students outdoor education, relegated to a few sessions per year, including the well-known Audubon New Mexico and Santa Fe Botanical Garden trips offered to elementary school students. When shared indoor environments like classrooms became uninhabitable last March, shuttering schools across the state, formal outdoor learning opportunities also stopped.
With the actual temperature predicted to plummet even further below zero and wind chills to be between 20 and 30 below zero tonight and into the early morning hours tomorrow, several school districts have notified KMMO they will be closed on Tuesday, February 16.
According to administrators, Gilliam C-4 School will be closed. Also closed will be Glasgow Public, Head Start and St. Mary’s in Glasgow; Immanuel Lutheran and Lafayette County C-1 in Higginsville; Northwestern at Mendon; Orearville R-4; Otterville; Pettis County R-5 in Houstonia and Hughesville; Santa Fe Schools in Alma and Waverly; Slater; and Trinity Lutheran in Alma.
Marshall Public Schools and Malta Bend R-5 will be distance learning.
UPDATED AT 8 A.M.
With the wintry weather overnight and continuing this morning in the KMMO listening area, several school districts have informed KMMO that they will not be holding classes today.
According to administrators, Prairie View State School in Marshall; Concordia Public; Hardin-Central; Miami R-1; Odessa R-7; Santa Fe Schools in Alma and Waverly; Sweet Springs R-7; and Trinity Lutheran in Alma will be closed today. Gilliam C-4 and Lexington R-5 schools will be closed today, but the districts will conduct distance learning.
Also, Otterville will be dismissing at 12:15 p.m.
