More than 80 people packed a meeting room and spilled out into the hallway of the Human Services Building on Wednesday night, July 14, to supportâor to damnâa plan to tear down and replace the iconic Sandwich Boardwalk.
The standing-room only crowd came to bear witness to the Sandwich Historic District Committeeâs deliberations on two separate questions: should the current boardwalk be razed; and should the proposed replacement structure be granted a certificate of appropriateness?
The committee voted 3-2 to grant a demolition permit after hearing more than an hour of presentations from the applicant and public comments, pro and con.

The Sandwich Historical Commission has approved the use of a mix of materials to repair parts of the exterior of First Church of Christ in Sandwich.
Specifically, the commission agreed that PVC can be used on the upper belfry and louvers and the column capitals can be made of a polymer cast from one of the original hand-carved capitals. However, wood must be used on the main structure, the commission members said.
A representative from the church was before the commission on Wednesday, July 7 seeking approval for its renovation plans.
Chairwoman Lisa Hassler said that this review is a new process for the board.
