Good morning Memphis. We re basking in another summer-like day as we get ready for a big Grizzlies-Trail Blazers game tonight that could have playoff implications.
But first, we re talking about mask requirements and when it might be time to lower restrictions.
To mask or not mask, that is the question
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris said it is possible changes will be made to the county’s COVID-19 regulations, including eliminating the mask mandate, to align them more closely with the state, our Katherine Burgess, Sam Hardiman and Corinne Kennedy report.

Earlier Tuesday, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announced he requested mayors of the six counties with independent health departments remove any remaining mask mandates and business restrictions before Memorial Day Weekend.
“Our hope is to be able to do that and be fully aligned with the state and best advice from federal authorities,” Harris said. “The virus doesn’t know any boundaries so it’s better practice to have a consistent approach across our state and nation.”

Mizzou follows up big weekend with more ‘crootin

But first we re focusing on the race to vaccinate children as a path toward herd immunity.
As COVID-19 vaccinations progress, one key demographic remains largely unvaccinated: children. Globally, and in Memphis, kids make up about a quarter of the population, our Laura Testino and Corrine Kennedy report in this story.
Until that key population is inoculated, reaching herd immunity already a fluid and elusive target will be almost impossible, medical experts said. Getting safe and effective vaccines for younger age groups will be essential to ending the pandemic and returning to any sense of normal, they reported.
