Many of Woodstockâs downtown businesses are in âdire straitsâ and some are even considering leaving the core, Oxford County council heard in a presentation this week by the cityâs business improvement area director.
The Downtown Woodstock BIA is looking for the county to âcome to the tableâ to help with solutions for the mental health, addictions and homelessness problems that plague the core and are affecting local businesses, said Virginia Armstrong, manager of the Downtown Woodstock BIA.

Woodstock city council has officially appointed a former councillor to its vacant seat, prompting a candidate who fell a few dozens votes shy of being elected to slam the decision.
Council held a special meeting Friday to approve the bylaw to appoint Todd Poetter, a city councillor from 2014 to 2018, to the seat left vacant by the death of former city police chief Ron Fraser in April.

But Kate Leatherbarrow, a candidate in the 2018 election who finished fifth by only 59 votes, said she disagreed with council’s decision to appoint a former councillor instead of choosing her for the seat as the next runner up.
