LAHORE: Pakistan’s auto industry is now looking at the government to come up with a new auto policy, as the previous long-term document that had been in effect since 2016 has expired.
Auto policy 2016-21 gave consumers greater choice as new players challenged existing car assemblers.
The new policy should be announced after analysing the impact of the expired policy. A look at the 2016-21 policy shows that it was only partially successful as new entrants made their mark in the market.
The monopoly of three Japanese manufacturers was only partially dented. Moreover, European brands opted out after showing initial interest. French automaker Renault announced to pull off its investment due to economic uncertainties.

Changan may have an answer to Mehmoodâs problem and people like him. The company is testing self-parking and to some extent the self-driving Level-3 autonomous compact SUV Uni-T.
The Pakistani auto industry has recently had the entrance of several new players into the market, with many of them introducing high-tech products.
Master Changan Motors is at the forefront of such developments because, as it hinted recently, Changan Pakistan is set to publically test its autonomous driving technology.

Master Changan Motors posted a promotional message on its Facebook page yesterday, announcing that it will put its self-driving technology up against the three of the most formidable elements of Pakistan’s roads the tricky road network, rush-hour traffic, and drowsy drivers.
As indicated in the post, Changan is planning a cross-country trip in one of its new SUVs (most likely the Uni T) whereby the technological features of the vehicle will be put through a series of tests, the effectiveness of which is likely to play a huge part in the desirability of the brand.
