Mayor Aalbers talks economic recovery and healthcare plans in the new year SHARE ON: (file photo) Looking back at the year that was 2020, Lloydminster Mayor Gerald Aalbers says there were a lot of exciting plans that were interrupted and he’ll be happy when he sees the year in the rear-view mirror. 2020 was set to be a big year for tourism in the city with several events scheduled throughout the year including the annual Colonial Days Fair, the Saskatchewan Summer Games and the O.T.S. Heavy Oil Show. The COVID-19 pandemic forced organizers to cancel them all and postpone them further into the future resulting in a hit to the local economy.

The reason cited was to protect the health and safety of the athletes, volunteers, spectators, event staff and residents of Lloydminster. The games had originally been scheduled for July 26 to Aug. 1 in 2020 and was postponed to summer 2021. Now it is off altogether, but the plan is to return the event to its normal four-year cycle in 2024. Lloydminster will have right of first refusal to host the games. “The athletes’ safety and comfort is paramount,” said Kevin Kusch, chair of the 2021 Sask. Summer Games host society, in a statement. “Considering the guidelines in place for competitive team sports such as baseball, soccer, and rugby, to name just a few, as a Host Society, we cannot offer athletes and their supporters the experience they deserve. The Saskatchewan Games Council, the City and the Lloydminster 2020 Host Society have made the decision to cancel the games due to rising concerns surrounding COVID-19 in the province and country. The Games were originally scheduled for July 26 to August 1, 2020, but were then moved to a tentative date of July 18 to 24, 2021. The decision to postpone the games by a year was made at the end of April.
