Sayed-Khaiyum while participating at the Fiji Law Society/International Bar Association Convention 2021’s question and answer session on the topic ‘Free Speech or Censorship: Lawyers and Social Media, assured lawyers that their freedom of speech was not restricted, and stressed the need for them to be mindful of the responsibilities and obligations they carry. “What you say as an individual, particularly if you’re an opinion shaper will carry a lot of weight, and therefore it brings forth a particular level of responsibility and a particular level of obligation for you to be careful in what you say.”

Picture: JOVESA NAISUA/FILE Lawyers should use social media to freely express their views on pressing issues in the country without fear, prominent Suva lawyer Richard Naidu told participants at the Fiji Law Society/International Bar Association Convention 2021 in Nadi recently. He was speaking on free speech or censorship: lawyers and social media. He said lawyers were not robots to only think about the law, but they did have strong opinions on other issues as well. “We may well resort to Twitter, Facebook, as we are people with opinions and must feel free to express them,” Mr Naidu said.
