For a very long time, Baldwin Township, which encompasses McKerrow, has been considered a bedroom community to the larger Town of Espanola. Located just three kilometres east of the Espanola turnoff of highways 17 and 6, the hamlet was incorporated in 1927.
It was named after FA Baldwin in the late 1800’s.

Today, Baldwin Township has 551 permanent residents and a large number of seasonal residents as well within its border.
In recent years, the township has seen many upgrades and improvements, creating a welcoming and family-oriented feel for residents and potential residents. Many of the new features of the township encourage outdoor activity and community gatherings.

And while we’re in a frenzy of cleaning, let’s be aware and watchful for perennials that may be starting to appear. Be gentle with the rake so they don’t get damaged or disturbed. There may be some weeds that need pulling. Yes, it’s a conundrum of gardening that we have to sometimes pull weeds before we have even planted anything! But aren’t those tough and durable weeds a determined lot! They survive the winter and flourish early. So take a quick walk through your garden and flowerbed areas and see if there are any unwelcome tenants taking up residence.
If you are looking for garden space, the Community Peace Garden (located at the Yorkton Alliance Church) still might have some garden plots available for the coming gardening season. Please call Warren at 306-782-3249 and he can tell you if they are all spoken for at this time. Did you know that April 22 is Earth Day? It’s a huge occasion, with events going on all over the world, in over 190 countries, to support awareness of the environment. According to Wikipedia, it has become “the largest secular holiday in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year”. That is an astonishing achievement.
This time of year is the time of excited hope as we look out at our slowly- emerging gardens: the snow is melting, and we can see clumps of our perennials’ stems and branches. Hopefully they all made it through the winter in fine form. We’ll see in the coming weeks. But for now, we see clean-up work ahead. As the pristine white snow melts, we are left with dusty and dirty drifts of snow along the edges of the garden, flattened and grimy leaves, and the gritty look that all gardens have first thing in the spring. We know a good cleaning will get rid of it, and if we are blessed to have some nice gentle rain, that will help a lot, too.
