Earley couple raise more than £250 for charity with community tree project

Earley community Christmas tree A COUPLE from Earley have raised more than £250 for a local charity after starting a community project on decorating their tree. Alex and Debbie Race announced in late November last year that they were going to make the tree at the front of their home a community Christmas tree, allowing residents to put any decorations up. With each tree decoration put up, the family said they would donate 50p to Launchpad Reading, a charity that seeks to help the homeless. The couple have since announced that they have since raised £150 (which they made their limit), matched by the Sage Foundation, meaning £300 was donated to the charity on January 9.

Thoughts for the Season

The Talmud (Rabbinical discussion of laws) says: “Our rabbis taught: On the twenty-fifth of [the beginning of] the eight days of Hanukkah, on which lamentation for the dead and fasting are forbidden. For when the Greeks entered the Temple, they defiled all the oils in it, and when the Hasmonean dynasty prevailed over them and defeated them, they searched and found only one bottle of oil sealed by the High Priest. It contained only enough for one day’s lighting. Yet a miracle was brought about with it, and they lit [with that oil] for eight days. The following year they were established as a festival, with Hallel [psalms of praise] and Thanksgiving. (Shabbat 21b)
