Escambia County s 200th anniversary features 5-month history project

When a county as rich in history as Escambia County creeps up on its 200th anniversary, a single day, month or even season s worth of celebrations do not suffice. Maybe a month would do for the 100th anniversary, but this is the big 2-0-0 we re talking about here.  That s why a commission of some of Pensacola s most accomplished historians, archaeologists and professors put their heads together in 2019 to begin planning what is now a five-month project to commemorate and recognize Florida s eldest county (along with St. Johns) on the lead-up to the county s official 200th birth date on July 17.

Mayor Proposes $200K For Homeless

Credit Pixabay After more than two years of discussion, could the city of Pensacola be ready to put its money where its mouth is in regard to the homeless? Mayor Grover Robinson is asking the City Council to approve spending $200,00 to pay for homeless initiatives such as a day-use center, which is part of a similar initiative by the city of Tallahassee and Leon County. “I saw the Kearney Center, which is really something that we’ve been sort of advocating for and that day center side,” the mayor said. “I think that could be a possibility. In their phase-2 they have taken several old hotels and turned them into transitional housing.”

Milton wants to bring riverfront dining, entertainment district to Blackwater

Pensacola News Journal As for now, the Quinn Street Marina area of Milton is a quiet, relatively undisturbed part of the city, containing an old, out-of-date marina, a few empty lots and a smattering of houses.  But in just a few years, the area could be transformed into a multi-million dollar Blackwater riverfront entertainment district, complete with dining and residences, a walking pathway along the river, public beach space and a completely revitalized, functioning marina.   The Milton City Council is expected to move forward Tuesday with approving a request for proposals that will officially be sent out Wednesday, soliciting ideas and conceptual designs from firms across the country interested in transforming and revitalizing the area of Milton. It s part of a nearly decade-old riverfront redevelopment plan initiated by the city in 2012, said Ed Spears, the director of economic development.
